Smart Insurance Tips
In the summer, many of us host parties or events at our homes or another venue. Having the right liability insurance protection is very important for a gathering of any size, particularly if you’re serving alcohol.
The size and type of event, and whether fees will be charged, are key factors that will determine what type of liability insurance you will need.
Here are a few things to be aware of when planning an event:
- Be sure to require a certificate of insurance naming you as an additional insured from all vendors that you hire, including caterers, valet parkers and tent companies, among others.
- If you’re charging a fee for entrance, food or drinks, your homeowner and umbrella policies may exclude coverage for the party. You may need to purchase a separate Special Event Policy.
- Have a plan for handling people who have had too much to drink.
- Clearly communicate with your insurance broker about your event plans. Make sure you are comfortable with the level of liability coverage provided by your Homeowner policy, Umbrella and/or Special Event policy.
