ARE YOU COVERED FOR HURRICANE DAMAGE?

SMART INSURANCE TIPS

The 2023 Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1 and will end on November 30. With higher than average activity predicted this year, it is important that you understand both your homeowner and flood insurance coverage so you know what to expect should your home suffer damage.

Most homeowner policies include coverage for wind damage caused by hurricanes, but beware: your policy likely has a separate hurricane deductible that’s much higher than your regular homeowner deductible.

Flood coverage is usually excluded from homeowner policies, so you’ll need a separate flood insurance policy to protect your home from tidal water and flooding from heavy rain.

Here are a few important tips:

1. Review your homeowner policy to make sure you have coverage for wind damage and be aware of your deductibles.

2. If you have a separate hurricane deductible, know what category storm triggers this deductible. Each insurance carrier handles this differently, and this detail can make a big difference when you file a claim.

3. If you have an uncomfortably high hurricane deductible, you may be able to reduce it for an additional premium.

4. If you don’t have flood insurance, consider buying it now, even if you’re in a non-hazardous flood zone. You likely won’t be able to obtain a flood policy when a storm is approaching. Flood coverage purchased through the National Flood Insurance Program will not take effect until 30 days after you submit your application.
